Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid: Predictions
Top of the league Atletico Madrid have the chance to strengthen their hopes of getting their hands on the Spanish crown on Saturday as they travel to third-placed Barcelona who sit just two points behind them with four games of the 2020/21 La Liga season remaining.
A win for Barça would take Ronald Koeman’s side to the top of the league – albeit potentially only for just over 24 hours with Real Madrid playing on Sunday night. However, having trailed the red and white side of Madrid for months, Koeman’s side now have the opportunity to leapfrog Diego Simeone’s men.
The game in Barcelona provides both sides a huge opportunity in what is both side’s last trophy to play for this season. Atletico have not put their hands on the league title since 2014 and despite having a healthy lead at the top of the table just a few months ago, it is set to come right down to the wire.
Defeats to Sevilla and Bilbao in recent weeks has given both Real Madrid and Barcelona a glimmer of hope. However, it still lies in the hands of Simeone’s side who will lift the trophy if they are able to win all of their four remaining games. Neither of the three sides are in hugely impressive form as it stands so how it will pan out is anyone’s guess, but it will make for an interesting few weeks as a neutral.
Barcelona vs Atletico Madrid: Match Stats
Lionel Messi still sits top of the scoring charts in La Liga this season. The Argentine has netted 28 times this campaign which is seven more than the next best in Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema. It is often on the biggest of stages that the 33-year-old magician shines brightest and this Saturday’s clash is just about as big as it will get this season for both sides. Atletico Madrid striker and former Barcelona man, Luis Suarez, has also shown impressive form this season with 19 goals in the league.
Ronald Koeman’s side has hardly proven to be defensively solid over the course of this season. In their last eight La Liga games, Barça have only been able to keep one clean sheet. In those eight games, there has been two defeats with one coming against title rivals Real Madrid in which they lost 2-1.
