Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid: Predictions
After cruising to the summit of La Liga, cracks have started to emerge in Atletico Madrid’s title bid, with the club enjoying just two wins from their last five games. Real Madrid, by contrast, travel to the Wanda Metropolitano unbeaten in five and still the only club to have played at Atleti’s new venue without defeat.
Diego Simeone’s men won 15 of their 16 La Liga contests between mid October and late January, which had them sitting comfortably atop the table, but a recent dip in form has just presented reigning champions Real and title aspirants Barcelona an opportunity to close the gap, which they have duly capitalised on.
Atleti have a game in hand, but the gap is now just five points between Barca in second and top spot, while a win for Real this weekend would close the gap between the Madrid foes to just two points, making it very uncomfortable for Simeone, who will now be looking over his shoulder with an overwhelming tinge of anxiety.
Real were once a speck in Atleti’s rear-view mirror, but the reigning champions have tapped into their winning mentality over the past few months, consolidating their standing in the top four, and are now making things very interesting near the peak of the table, with the title race seemingly wide open.

Atletico Madrid vs Real Madrid: Match Stats
Simeone hasn’t enjoyed much success over Zinedine Zidane across his career, so he is likely to be as cautious as ever this weekend, which does not bode well for the neutral looking for a goal-fest. In fact, Simeone has won just 12.5% of his games vs Zidane in La Liga (one win, four draws, three defeats).
His side have fired a blank in their last three league games against Real (335 minutes) since Antoine Griezmann’s goal in February 2019, while there have been under 2.5 goals scored in nine of the last 11 Madrid derbies in La Liga. Another cagey affair is looking likely.
But, if one player is going to break that scoring duck in Madrid derbies for the hosts, then it is Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan has scored nine goals in 12 games against Real in La Liga, more than any other player in the competition since his first season in 2014/15.

Atleti have failed to win any of their last nine La Liga games against Real (five draws, four defeats), their longest run without a victory in a derby under Simeone. Their last goal against Real came five games ago in a 3-1 reversal when Griezmann was still leading the line. In fact, you would have to go back to February 2016 for Atleti’s last win over Los Blancos in La Liga, with Griezmann the only scorer on that day.
