The Champions League returns this week, bringing the game’s best and most lucrative to one stage — and over in Group B, Atletico Madrid and Porto ready themselves for a potential corker at the Metropolitano, with two animated coaches set to pit tactical wits on the sidelines.

For Atleti, the perpetually-arms-outstretched Diego Simeone has a golden track record in Europe’s flagship competition, reaching two finals during his reign in Madrid, but his side are currently in the midst of a concerning run that’s seen them go winless in their previous eight home games in the Champions League, the longest ever such run at home by any Spanish club in the competition.

Sergio Conceicao, in the opposite corner, will be partaking in his 35th Champions League match in charge of Porto, the most of any manager for the club, and he will want to mark the occasion by striking another blow in that simply awful home record for Atleti. Should Conceicao seal victory, then he will overtake Jesualdo Ferreira as the outright most succesful Porto manager in the competition, in terms of most wins (currently tied on 16).

If Porto play a high line to counter Atleti’s typical low block then Simeone will look to exploit the created space in behind Conceicao’s backline. It’s a tactic that’s worked wonders for him over the years, albeit a tad frustrating for the neutral — and the opposition. Pragmatism reigns supreme where Simeone’s concerned. The downside to such an approach means runs have to be timed to perfection, and unfortunately for Atleti, that is not always the case. In fact, since the start of 2019/20, only Man City (76) and PSG (74) have registered more offsides in the Champions League than Atletico Madrid (66).

Antoine Griezmann may view this match as an opportunity to really kick on with his 2022/23 season. The mrecurial French forward was directly involved in 67 per cent of Atleti’s goals in last season’s Champions League, scoring four and assisting two. In fact, each of his last 10 goals for the club in the competition have been scored in the group stage, while he both scored and assisted against Porto last season.

07 Dec 2021 – Porto 1-3 Atletico Madrid – Champions League

15 Sep 2021 – Atletico Madrid 0-0 Porto – Champions League

11 Dec 2013 – Atletico Madrid 2-0 Porto – Champions League

01 Oct 2013 – Porto 1-2 Atletico Madrid – Champions League

08 Dec 2009 – Atletico Madrid 0-3 Porto – Champions League

These two met in the competition last campaign. The home tie ended with a whimper as the respective defences muzzled the respective frontlines. In Portugal, though, it was a different story. The first half was a rather tame affair, but the second half exploded to life, with Atleti scoring three goals through Griezmann, Angel Correa and Rodrigo De Paul, while Yannick Carrasco also got sent off. For Porto, Sergio Oliveira netted a late penalty, while Wendell and Agustin Marchesin were sent off. It was carnage to make up for a game and a half of blandness.
