Atletico Madrid are closing in on a first La Liga title since 2014, but Diego Simeone must oversee the final two matches with absolutely zero hiccups or risk the chasing pack overtaking them, with just two points currently separating Atleti in first from Real Madrid in second.

The capital club have so far managed a difficult set of fixtures for May, keeping Barcelona at bay in a goalless stalemate at the Camp Nou before taking on and defeating 2019/20 Copa del Ray winners Real Sociedad 2-1 last time out.

Having come through that ominous period relatively unscathed, Simeone must now ensure his side see the job through, avoiding any banana skins between now and La Liga’s curtain-closer next week, where Atleti take on relegation-threatened Real Valladolid.

But, first a tricky contest against Osasuna who can neither mathematically secure European football nor can they get relegated, with the club hovering comfortably in mid-table, but Jagoba Arrasate’s men have lost just twice in their last 10 games and will no doubt want to see the season out in style.

Defensively Atletico Madrid are one of the best in the business, boasting a formidable rearguard that is exceptionally stubborn and a world-class goalkeeper ready to snuff out any danger. In fact, only Lille (20) have kept more clean sheets than Atleti (18) across Europe’s top five leagues this season, while the Spanish club have also registered nine shutouts against Osasuna in their last 14 meetings. 

However, the club’s up-and-at-em approach can often prove their downfall as well, with Simeone’s men currently third in the charts for most bookings in La Liga this season (92), encapsulating the very essence of the Argentine’s tenacious exploits during his playing days. For a contest of such magnitude, though, the Atleti players will need to temper their often boiling-point antics and not let emotions run wild. These next two games need a composed front.
