Jurgen Klopp’s side have been perfect in the Champions League so far this season, as far as results are concerned at least. The Reds are five points clear of Atletico Madrid and Porto after just three games and could be one of the first teams to seal their place in the last-16 with a win on Wednesday. Victory would be enough for Liverpool as Atletico Madrid would no longer be able to overtake them, while Porto dropping points would also secure top spot for the Reds with two games to spare. Despite winning all three of their matches, Liverpool haven’t made it easy, with 3-2 victories over Atletico Madrid and AC Milan while they lost a 2-0 lead against Brighton at the weekend to draw.

Atletico Madrid will have been cursing themselves for losing to Liverpool last time out as they worked hard to come from two goals down before Antoine Griezmann’s red card allowed their opponents to retake control. That was the start of a three-game winless run for Atletico Madrid, with Diego Simeone’s side following up the defeat to Liverpool with 2-2 draws against Real Sociedad and Levante, having to come from 2-0 down against the former and conceding a late equaliser vs the latter. However, they were comfortable in victory at the weekend, beating Real Betis 3-0 at home to move up to fourth, just three points behind leaders Real Sociedad.

Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid: Match Stats

Mohamed Salah’s 10-game goalscoring run was ended by Brighton at the weekend, but that will only make him more eager to score against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday. The Egyptian has netted 15 goals in 13 games across all competitions so far this season and hasn’t failed to score in two consecutive games since the end of last season.

Including extra time, seven of Atletico Madrid’s last nine away goals in the Champions League have scored been scored in the 84th minute or later. Their last away goal in the competition was a 97th-minute winner from Luis Suarez against AC Milan on MD2, with the Uruguayan scoring from the penalty spot.
