Real Madrid vs Atalanta: Predictions
The Galacticos took an away goal back to Madrid after Ferland Mendy’s 86th-minute goal won the game on the night for the away side against the 10-man Italians after Remo Frueler was shown a straight red card early in the first half.
Since the defeat to Madrid, the Italian side have won three of their four games in Serie A – only losing to Inter Milan. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side have scored 10 goals across those four games and only conceded three goals which has seen the Italian minnows climb back into the top four of the Serie A table.
Unlike Tuesday’s visitors, Madrid have only won one of their three league games since the pair met in the Champions League. Consecutive 1-1 draws with Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid were then corrected by a 2-1 win on Saturday against Elche. However, Zinedine Zidane’s side were trailing until the 73rd minute and only took the lead in stoppage time as Karim Benzema doubled his tally for the day.
Atalanta failed to register a shot on target in the first-leg of the tie, only had 31% of the ball and they proved to be a difficult unit to break down. However, it will get to a point in the second-leg where the Italian side will have to chase the tie if they hope to progress which could leave them exposed at the back.
Real Madrid vs Atalanta: Match Stats
Real Madrid have a fantastic record of progressing from knockout ties when they have taken the lead in the first leg. The Galacticos have progressed from eight of their last nine Champions League ties in which they have carried a lead into the second leg and Madrid hold a stunning record against Italian opposition having won 11 of their last 12 games in the Champions League.
Benzema leads the way for Madrid in the Champions League as the Frenchman tops their goal-scoring chart with four goals in the competition and in his last four games in La Liga he has netted on five occasions – taking his league tally to 15 for the season.
