At the halfway stage of the Premier League season, Southampton find themselves rooted to the bottom of the table, with Nathan Jones still struggling to show why Saints decided he was the right man to replace Ralph Hasenhuttl. While he has had some success in the EFL Cup, knocking Manchester City out of the quarter-finals, Jones lost his first four Premier League matches in charge of Southampton.
Liverpool, Brighton, Fulham and Nottingham Forest all took three points off Southampton, which had them looking adrift at the bottom of the table. But to be fair to Jones he may have Southampton on an upward trajectory, with three wins in their past three across all competitions. Last time out it was a 2-1 victory over Everton in the Premier League which drew Southampton level with the Toffees and 18th-placed West Ham, only bottom on goal difference.
Aston Villa have also changed managers this season and life under Unai Emery has gone a bit better. The Villans are 11th, 10 points clear of the bottom three and only six being sixth-placed Fulham, with Emery’s side perhaps having an eye on Europa League football.
They go into this game unbeaten in three matches with two wins and draw since suffering defeat for the first time under Emery, beaten 3-1 by Liverpool on their return from the World Cup. First Tottenham fell on New Year’s Day before a draw with Wolves and 2-1 win over Leeds last week.

Danny Ings is about to secure his move to West Ham, leaving Aston Villa without their top scorer for the season, with Ings netting seven goals across all competitions. But as one of the potential goalscoring replacements, Emiliano Buendia has scored two goals in his past three Premier League games, as many as he had managed in his previous 20.
Southampton have been struggling in front of goal this season with just 69 shots on target in 19 Premier League games. Their average of 3.6 per game is also their lowest on record in a single Premier League campaign, since 1997-98.
