Unai Emery made an instant impact for the Villans last week as they were impressive victors over Manchester United, but back-to-back Premier League wins for Roberto De Zerbi has added that little bit of confidence to Brighton as well.
Emery’s narrow 4-4-2 system really capitalised on Manchester United’s spaces between their back four and allowed their more creative players, Emiliano Buendia and Jacob Ramsey in this case, to populate the half-spaces and use them effectively to create chances for Leon Bailey and Ollie Watkins. The way De Zerbi sets his teams up, thoughm means that it is less likely for those spaces to be available for Aston Villa.
De Zerbi’s mastery of space on the football pitch to second to none and so far his version of Brighton is just as impressive, if not more so, than Graham Potter’s. There are similarities to Potter, though; players can, and do, pop up in different areas of the pitch under the Italian, and Brighton have continued to be a high chance creation team. To emphasise this point, The Seagulls are averaging the third-highest non-penalty xG per match in their last four matches (1.39xG).
The tempo for this match will be nice and high to begin with and if there is an early goal then the floodgates could open at the Amex. The bookmakers have it about right by having Brighton as favourites, but there is still enough juice in the price to like that angle. Both teams have scored in each of Brighton’s last four matches and with Villa’s potential firepower. This also seems like a good bet.

Brighton vs Aston Villa match stats
The way that these teams generate their goal could not be more different. Brighton have yet to register a goal from a player who would be considered a centre forward, Danny Welbeck, Denis Undav, and Julio Enciso have failed to find the net. Conversely, Aston Villa’s three highest goalscorers this season are their strikers, Leon Bailey (3), Danny Ings (3), and Ollie Watkins (2).
Brighton’s performance indicators are very consistent with their current league position. The Seagulls have the sixth-most shots in the league, the sixth-highest shots on target total and the sixth-best xG total in the Premier League. Where they don’t rank as highly is in converting those shots, with a ranking of 13th in goals per shot and 14th in goals per shot on target.

That was a game also notable for containing Solly March’s last league goal to date, he has had over 50 Premier League shots since this goal.
