Aston Villa vs Arsenal: Predictions
Dean Smith’s men were unable to build on their 1-0 win over Southampton, losing 3-1 at home to high-flying West Ham on Wednesday night.
That said, the Villains are still within reach of the European places and have games in hand on those around them, and fans will certainly have high expectations here after seeing a 3-0 win on the road over Arsenal the last time these two sides met.
But Arsenal will be motivated by the fact they’ve taken just one point from their last two games, not to mention the unfortunate fashion in which they threw away a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 against Wolves last time out. The Gunners certainly have a point to prove.
Mikel Arteta’s side are just a point behind Villa in the table but having played two more games than their hosts, they can ill afford to drop points.
Aston Villa vs Arsenal: Match Stats
Aston Villa’s event count by zone from their 3-0 win over Arsenal this season
Emiliano Martinez is looking to become the first goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet in their first two Premier League appearances against a club they’ve previously appeared for in the competition since Mark Schwarzer vs Middlesbrough in 2009. Dean Smith’s men have won their last two games against Arsenal without conceding a single goal, so Martinez will be confident of matching that record.
That said, Arsenal’s Nicolas Pépé has scored in each of his last three away games in the Premier League while the Gunners have failed to score just twice in their last 10 games in the competition.
Ollie Watkins netted twice at the Emirates earlier this season against Arsenal in their 3-0 Premier League win – only Didier Drogba has ever scored two or more goals in consecutive Premier League games against the Gunners, doing so in the 2009/10 season.
There have been over 2.5 goals in 14 of the last 17 meetings between Aston Villa and Arsenal in all competitions.
