For the first month, 2021/22 looked set to be a horrible season for Arsenal as they embarked on their worst start to a campaign for over 50 years. In the Premier League they had lost their opening three matches without scoring, conceding nine goals including a shock 2-0 defeat to newly-promoted Brentford on the opening day. However, the Gunners have started to turn this around post-international break and go into his game off the back of two 1-0 wins over Norwich and Burnley, lifting the Gunners up to 13th in the table. Not participating in European competition for the first time since 1994/95, this isn’t Arsenal’s first match in the EFL Cup this season as they beat Championship side West Brom 6-0 in the second round.
Meanwhile, their visitors Wimbledon are looking to get up to the Championship this season and have started the season fairly well, currently sitting seventh in League One after eight games. The Dons have won three, drawn three and lost two of their games so far, with one of those defeats coming at the weekend against promotion-chasing Plymouth Argyle. Wimbledon have also added another two wins in the EFL Cup so far, beating Charlton and Northampton 1-0 to set up this big trip across London to the Emirates.
Arsenal vs Wimbledon: Match Stats
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hasn’t had the greatest of starts to the season in the Premier League, scoring just one goal in four appearances so far – though it was the Gunners’ first strike of the campaign. However, he has found more luck in the EFL Cup, bagging a hat-trick in the 6-0 win over West Brom, and up against lower league opposition again the Gabonese striker may lo0k to get his fill.
Arsenal may have won their past two league games 1-0, but as the EFL Cup second round showed there are goals in this squad. At the same time, Wimbledon have been involved in high-scoring games this season including a 4-3 win over Morecambe in the league and 5-3 victory against Portsmouth in the EFL Trophy.
