Arsenal have made a disappointing start to the New Year, losing to Manchester City in the Premier League and exiting both the FA Cup — at the hands of Nottingham Forest — and the League Cup. Mikel Arteta will therefore look to get his side’s 2022 up and running when Burnley venture south.
The Gunners remain in the frame for a top-four finish, currently sixth and only two points behind West Ham in the last Champions League qualification place with two games in hand on the Hammers, who face a daunting trip to Manchester United. So Arteta will know the importance of avoiding a banana skin here.
Burnley have been in dire straits so could do with a morale-boosting victory to give themselves a slither of hope. Sean Dyche’s men are bottom of the pile, though they have plenty of games in hand, recently lost star striker Chris Wood and are winless in their last 11 Premier League away games. Can they produce an upset?
Arsenal vs Burnley: Match Stats
Martin Odegaard could be the difference-maker here for Arsenal. The Norwegian playmaker has been involved in six goals in his last seven Premier League appearances for the Gunners (three goals, three assists), which is two more than he had in his first 25 games in the competition (two goals, two assists).
Burnley’s best route to goal here could be aerially. They have netted six headed goals this term, which is a staggering 38% of their total output. Wood may have left, a serial protagonist when it comes to the skies, but in Ben Mee they have a player who has already scored two headed goals this term, a tally bettered only by Callum Wilson (three) and Diogo Jota (three) in the Premier League.
