Argentina finally ended their trophy drought this summer by winning the Copa America and thus allowing their legendary forward Lionel Messi to lift an international trophy for the first time. The venue and their final opponents were, of course, none other than their oldest and dearest rivals, Brazil.
Unsurprisingly, the two great powers of international football are dominating this qualifying section in CONMEBOL once again. As things stand, it’s Brazil that lead the way with 34 points after 12 games, but Argentina are just six points behind and remain unbeaten so far, winning eight and drawing four thus far.
Since their Copa America victory, Albiceleste have won five and drawn one of their six qualifying fixtures, including an impressive duo of wins over Uruguay. Indeed, it was Angel Di Maria who again got on the scoresheet as they overcame la Celeste in Montevideo just a matter of days ago.
Brazil’s record since this summer’s tournament has been identical, with five wins and one draw to their name. They started this particular international break with a 1-0 win over Colombia on Thursday night, with Lucas Paqueta’s strike securing all three points in Sao Paolo.
Argentina vs Brazil: Match Stats
Although they may not have been known for having a particularly tight defence over the years, this current Argentina outfit have made themselves difficult to break down and have kept five consecutive clean sheets ahead of this match. They kept Brazil from scoring in the Copa America final and we expect them to do so again here.
Argentina have been particularly strong in the opening stages of their recent games, taking the lead before half-time in all but one of their last 10 matches. Brazil meanwhile, have failed to find the net before the half-time whistle in three of their last four matches, so we fancy the hosts to go in ahead at the break here.

Victories have been shared pretty equally between these two sides in recent meetings, but the most recent meeting was in the Copa America Final back in July, where Argentina ran out 1-0 winners thanks to Angel Di Maria’s winning goal.
