Inter and great rivals Milan are currently locked in a swelteringly intense Serie A title race, but for now those table-topping exploits will be put on hold as the Coppa Italia returns in midweek, with both of these sides looking to bolster their respective trophy cabinets with further silverware after a tame 0-0 in the first leg.
Simone Inzaghi certainly knows a thing or two about winning the Coppa Italia, having claimed the trophy three times as a player with Lazio, and once in the capital dugout, winning the 2018/19 edition having knocked Milan out of the semi-finals. He will be hoping to replicate that feat here, and meet one of Fiorentina or Juventus in the final.
The Nerazzurri last won the Coppa Italia in 2011, but you would have to go back to 2003 for the last time Milan won it, nearly two decades ago now. Stefano Pioli will have his eyes firmly set on usurping Inter for this season’s Scudetto, but he will certainly not be taking his eye off this latest Derby della Madonnina, both for bragging rights and a genuine chance to win something tangible.

Inter Milan vs AC Milan: Match Stats
In the three matches Inter Milan and AC Milan have met this season, three of the five goals have been scored in the first half, which certainly makes sense for a Derby della Madonnina, given how white-hot the atmosphere is from the off at the San Siro. This is one of football’s most intense and fierce rivalries. Expect fireworks from the first whistle.
There could certainly be plenty of goalmouth action. Hakan Calhanoglu has both scored and assisted against Milan since crossing the divide in the summer, and he will be looking to put his former club to the sword to justify his switch, while Olivier Giroud bagged a match-winning brace against Inter last time out — and he is currently leading the goalscorer charts in the competition so far (three goals).

05 Feb 2022 – Inter Milan 1-2 AC Milan – Serie A
07 Oct 2021 – AC Milan 1-1 Inter Milan – Serie A
21 Feb 2021 – AC Milan 0-3 Inter Milan – Serie A
26 Jan 2021 – Inter Milan 2-1 AC Milan – Coppa Italia
It was a very tame 0-0 in the first leg of this semi-final showdown last month, but there will need to be a winner here. When these sides met in Serie A back in February, Giroud proved the difference-maker and match-decider, netting a three-minute brace to sink Inter and bolster Milan’s chances of winning the Italian championship.
