Free agent XI: The best players out of contract in summer 2020
At the end of every season, there is a mad scramble to secure the signings of the most prestigious talents available on free transfers following the expiration of their contracts.
This summer will be no different and there are quite a few ‘prize catches’ available in the open ocean of the 2020 market. Star names will be available to the highest bidder, with World Cup finalist Luka Modric expected to be one such player with no shortage of options available to him.
Three or four clubs in the Premier League alone would love to add him to their squad with sides like Manchester United and Chelsea looking for a playmaker who can run the midfield.
There is also competition from Asia with countries like China and Japan recently attracting the likes of Andres Iniesta — just one example of a man who was tempted to try something new — and other superstars to their shores.
Also, let us not forget the pull of MLS, where players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Wayne Rooney recently plied their trade, albeit, before returning to Europe with AC Milan and Derby County respectively.
Modric is not the only star heading onto the open market either — Atalanta’s primo playmaker Josip Iličić is also in the final months of his current deal at the Bergamo club and would have no shortage of suitors this summer.
The Slovenian star has been exceptional for La Dea and the 31-year-old has proven he is still in his prime.
So, who will gamble, who will stick and which stars will be forcing football’s world elite into a bidding war at the end of the season?
