Besiktas vs Galatasaray build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

The reigning Turkish champions have endured a hesitant few weeks in all competitions, following up a 3-2 loss to cross-city adversaries Istanbul Basaksehir with a  4-1 capitulation against Sporting in the Champions League, so the emphasis on bouncing back with a derby win on Monday is simply huge for Yalcin.

Galatasaray were just pipped to the Super Lig title last season by Besiktas, with both clubs finishing level on points at the summit, so the runners-up will be looking to exact revenge here, and Fatih Terim’s side enter this showdown at the Vodafone Arena on a tear of five unbeaten games and three consecutive wins in the league.

  • Besiktas (vs Sporting): Destanoglu; Rosier, Welinton, Vida, N’Sakala; Pjanic, Souza, Ghezzal, Teixeira, Larin; Batshuayi.
  • Galatasaray (vs Lokomotiv Moscow): Muslera; Yedlin, Nelsson, Marcao, Van Aanholt; Antalyali, Kutlu, Yilmaz, Cicaldau, Babel; Mohamed.

Mehmet Topal, Georges-Kevin Nkoudou and club captain Atiba Hutchinson are all currently sidelined for the hosts, with the skipper withdrawn at half time against Istanbul Basaksehir and absent for the recent 4-1 loss to Sporting. In the opposite corner, Arda Turan and Sacha Boey are currently unavailable for selection but Terim welcomes back Marcao, who featured against Lokomotiv Moscow, from suspension in the Super Lig.

Player to watch: Miralem Pjanic (Besiktas)

The elegant Bosnian playmaker has seen his stock nosedive since he traded Juventus for Barcelona in 2020, with the press-resistant midfielder unable to replicate his Serie A exploits in the Spanish top flight, and now, at the age of 31, he finds himself out on loan in Turkey looking to rediscover his once world class form.

On paper, Pjanic is an archetypal Barca player, neat in possession, a visual vanguard in terms of his distribution and reading of the game, and composed when put under pressure, but for one reason or another, things just didn’t work out under Ronald Koeman. His job is now to bring his Juve persona to Istanbul.

For Besiktas, the midfielder is still trying to find his feet in an unfamiliar division, and he recently returned to the team following a two-game Super Lig absence with a thigh strain, but he was unable to seriously influence the game as his side fell to a debilitating and sobering 4-1 reversal against Sporting in midweek.

If ever there was a game for a player to truly announce himself, it’s a derby, and they don’t come much more intense, passionate and lively than an Istanbul derby, and of course, there is the added spice from last season’s photo-finish to the title race. Pjanic will be desperate to leave an imprint here.
