Bonzi is the world no. 56 but he is just two wins away from going into Wimbledon off the back of an Open championship. The Frenchman has had an excellent run at the Mallorca Open so far, making the semi-finals without dropping a single set in his three matches.
Bonzi entered the Mallorca Open at the first round and was pit against qualifier Alejandro Tabilo, winning 6-3, 4-2, with the Chilean having to retire in the second set due to injury. Some may have expected Bonzi’s journey to end in the second round against third seed Denis Shapovalov but that was a more straightforward victory for the Frenchman, winning 6-4, 6-1. Then, in the semi-finals, German Daniel Altmaier fell 6-3, 6-4.
In a repeat of the Halle Open first round, Bonzi will play world no. 6 Stefanos Tsitsipas, who will be hoping of a repeat of his three-set victory. As the second seed for the Mallorca Open, Tsitsipas entered at the second round and was drawn against Ilya Ivaskha, beating the Belarusian 6-4, 6-4.
While that was a comfortable enough victory, Tsitsipas was really made to work for his win in the quarter-finals, taken to three sets by American Marcos Giron. After taking the first set in a tie breaker, Tsitsipas allowed his opponent back into the game and dropped the second set. But the Greek eventually came through 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-3. He cannot afford a slip against Bonzi.
Prediction: Stefanos Tsitsipas to win in three sets
