Benfica vs Maritimo build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

A ongoing four-game win streak has bolstered Benfica’s chances of reaching next season’s Champions League, though third place would require Jorge Jesus’ to go through another qualification phase. As things stand, the Eagles are six points behind second place FC Porto, who have played a game more. At home they’ve been near flawless this season. Heading into this game Benfica have played 12 games at Estádio da Luz, winning nine of those contests whilst suffering just one loss (2-3 v Braga).

Benfica’s present situation is in contrast to Marítimo, who are entrenched in a relegation battle. Julio Velázquez’s side are second from bottom, albeit just one point away from escaping the danger zone. One win across their previous 10 league games, which includes suffering eight defeats, has not helped matters but given how tight things are Marítimo shouldn’t be discouraged in their bid to stave off demotion from Portugal’s top division. Marítimo’s recent away form is, in fact, somewhat encouraging. They visit the nation’s capital having picked up seven points from the last 15 available on the road.

  • Benfica (vs Braga): Leite; Veríssimo, Vertonghen, Otamendi; Gonçalves, Weigl, Taarabt, Grimaldo; Waldschmidt, Rafa Silva; Seferovic.
  • Maritimo (vs Famalicão): Abedzadeh; Winck, Júnior, Léo Andrade, Hermes; Milson, Jean, Bambock, Guitane; Pinho, Tagueu.

Benfica will be without midfielder Pizzi after he recently accumulated five yellow cards. Andre Almeida and Andreas Samaris are in the physio room. As for the visitors, Léo Andrade and Rodrigo Pinho respectively serve a one-match ban.

Player to watch: Haris Seferovic (Benfica)

It’s fair to say Haris Seferovic has returned to form. A stretch of nine league games between November 2020 and February 2021 which saw him register just one goal caused alarm, with many questioning whether the 29-year-old Swiss marksman was running out of gas. He’s answered those critics in style by netting seven goals across his next six Primeira Liga appearances. Seferovic also goes into this latest outing having scored in each of his past four matches, which echoes a similar run before (during the 2019/20 campaign he’d score in eight consecutive league matches for the Eagles).

It remains to be seen whether he’s able to replicate that streak but the once written-off striker has given himself every chance of doing so again.
