Benfica vs Arouca build-up & previous line-ups:

It’s now one championship won in four seasons for Benfica as they head into this new campaign. Jorge Jesus’ men, who finished third in 2020/21 and nine points behind champions Sporting, are naturally among the favourites but you can hardly blame them if their immediate focus is elsewhere. The Eagles are currently seeking qualification for the Champions League group phase. Benfica had faced Spartak Moscow before their season opener away to Moreirense — where they ran out 1-2 winners — and now have a date with Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven for that coveted berth after welcoming Arouca to Estádio da Luz.

On their return to Portugal’s top-flight after three seasons away Arouca, who finished third in Liga Portugal 2, fell on matchday one when Estoril left their backyard with a 0-2 win. Armando Evangelista’s men now visit one of the league’s big three with nothing to really lose. This weekend’s match will be the fifth time Arouca have played a league game at Estádio da Luz with three of those previous outings ending in defeat. They also go into this Primeira Liga game looking to end a nine-match winless streak on the road with their last victory coming in January 2017 when they secured a 1-2 victory at Tondela.

  • Benfica (vs Spartak Moscow): Vlachodimos; Veríssimo, Otamendi, Vertonghen; Gonçalves, Mário, Weigl, Grimaldo; Pizzi, Rafa Silva; Ramos.
  • Arouca (vs Estoril Praia): Braga; Thales, Aloé, Velázquez, Joel; Moreira, Silva; Bukia, Eugeni, Arsénio; André Silva.

Player to watch: Luca Waldschmidt (Benfica)

One of eight major signings made by Benfica last summer — which also included Jan Vertonghen, Everton and Nicolás Otamendi — it was a mixed 2020/21 league campaign for 25-year-old German forward Luca Waldschmidt despite bagging a brace in his debut against Famalicão on matchday one. Waldschmidt struck two more times on the fourth matchday at Rio Ave but would then score only three goals across 23 further appearances. He started the 2021/22 season on the right footing having found the net on the opening weekend at Moreirense though he didn’t last the full 90 minutes as manager Jorge Jesus sacrificed him after Diogo Gonçalves was sent off just before the hour mark.
