Aptly called the ‘Low Countries derby’, this fixture goes back a long way. Belgium and the Netherlands have faced off in 125 official derbies so far, with only Austria vs Hungary and Argentina vs Uruguay being contested more often. The Dutch have the upper hand historically, winning 55 games to Belgium’s 41, though the Red Devils are unbeaten in their last eight against Oranje — their latest defeat coming back in a World Cup qualifier in September 1997.
Belgium beat Burkina Faso 3-0 in a friendly last time out, extending their unbeaten run to seven games across all competitions — last losing 2-1 to Italy in the European Championships quarter-finals. Roberto Martinez’s side went all the way to the semi-finals and finished fourth in the 2020/21 Nations League and will look to lay down an early marker against their rivals here.
The Netherlands, meanwhile, enter this match on a nine-game unbeaten run, last losing themselves at the Euros — 2-0 to the Czech Republic in the round-of-16. The Dutch finished second to Italy in League A Group 1 in the previous edition of this tournament, but made it to the final in the inaugural edition, eventually losing to Portugal.
Scoreline prediction: Belgium 3-1 Netherlands
