We’re onto the final day of the quarter-finals at the 2023 French Open, and both Beatriz Haddad Maia and Ons Jabeur will fancy their chances of making it into the final third. Jabeur is the higher-ranked player going into this match, the seventh seed for the tournament, but she is making her quarter-final bow at Roland Garros. The first ever Tunisian and Arab women to reach the quarter-finals of the French Open, Jabeur’s previous best at the tournament was the fourth round, and she was knocked out of the first round last year — before going onto reach the finals of Wimbledon and the US Open.

There was another early exit, however, at the Australian Open in January in what has been a challenging year for Jabeur due to injury problems. But she appears to be back on top form at Roland Garros, dropping just one set en route to the quarter-finals, knocking out Lucia Bronzetti, Oceane Dodin, Olga Danilovic and Bernarda Pera, the latter 6-3, 6-1.

Haddad Maia is also on her best run at the French Open having only previously made it to the main draw twice from five attempts, a first-round exit in 2017 and second-round defeat to Kaia Kanepi. Then, Haddad Maia was unseeded but fast forward a year, the Brazilian is the 14th seed at Roland Garros and 15th in the world — ranking her highest ever at 12th just a few months ago.

There was a quarter-final appearance in preparation for the French Open, this time in Italy, but Haddad Maia was beaten in three sets by 30th seed Anhelina Kalinina. Unlike Jabeur, Haddad Maia hasn’t had a smooth run at Roland Garros this year, taken to three sets in three of her four matches and having to come from behind in each of the last two.

Prediction: Ons Jabeur in three sets
