Bayern Munich will look to strengthen their hold on the Bundesliga title when they host Union Berlin on Saturday at 2:30pm (UK time).

The Bavarians are seven points clear at the top of the table after their 1-0 win over second-place RB Leipzig last week. Union Berlin, meanwhile, are seventh and haven’t given up on securing a Europa League spot yet.

Bayern Munich vs Union Berlin build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

Bayern generated a number of great chances against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday but fell to a 3-2 quarter-final first-leg defeat. For the first time, the absence of Robert Lewandowski has really hurt Hansi Flick. But domestically, Bayern continue to roll on, winning their last five Bundesliga matches to leave them on the cusp of a ninth straight title and their 30th overall.

Union have enjoyed a wonderful second season in the German top-flight, currently sitting seventh, just four points behind Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League places. But if Urs Fischer’s men are to secure a landmark European qualification, they’ll have to improve on a run of just two wins in their last 11 Bundesliga matches, which includes a 1-1 draw with city rivals Hertha Berlin last time out.

  • Bayern Munich (vs PSG): Neuer; Pavard, Sule*, Alaba, Hernandez*; Kimmich, Goretzka*; Sane, Muller, Coman; Choupo-Moting.
  • Union Berlin (vs Hertha Berlin): Luthe; Friedrich, Knoche, Schlotterbeck*; Trimmel, Andrich, Promel, Ryerson; Gentner; Musa, Kruse.

Leon Goretzka, Niklas Sule and Lucas Hernandez all suffered injuries in midweek and will at the very least miss this weekend’s fixture, while Alphonso Davies will complete the final game of his two-match suspension. Serge Gnabry, Douglas Costa, Robert Lewandowski and Corentin Tolisso remain sidelined.

Sheraldo Becker and Anthony Ujah have undergone surgery on ankle and knee injuries, respectively, while Taiwo Awoniyi and Leon Dajaku are also out. Keven Schlotterbeck is a doubt.

Player to watch: Thomas Muller (Bayern Munich)

Lewandowski is 25 Bundesliga goals clear of any other Bayern player this season so, with the Poland international still sidelined for the next few weeks, Flick needs his other attackers to step up.

Thomas Muller did just that against PSG in midweek, heading home Joshua Kimmich’s free-kick to, at the time, draw Bayern level with the French champions. With 10 goals, Muller is the only other Bayern player to hit double figures in the Bundesliga this season, while no player in the German top-flight has managed more than his 15 assists.

Muller’s ability to find space where nobody else can and his unerring finishing will be needed again this weekend as Bayern look to brush aside an often stubborn Union Berlin outfit.
