Bayern Munich may be giants of other sports but they haven’t quite conquered basketball, winning the Basketball Bundesliga just five times, most recently in 2018/19. Things were slightly different in the second match against Virtus Bologna as Bayern ultimately paid the price for a poor opening quarter, going eight points down. Although they had cut the deficit to two points by at half-time, Virtus Bologna never really looked like relinquishing their advantage and held on for a 66-63 victory.
Having reached the Final Four in each of the past two campaigns, and finishing as runners-up in 2020/21, Barcelona will be hoping they can finally end their 13-year wait for Euroleague glory this season. But they opened the new campaign with an 80-70 defeat to Olympiacos, who had also reached the Final Four last season.
The next match brought the Clasico against bitter rivals Real Madrid, a perfect chance to bounce back with emphasis, or an obstacle that could compile the misery at Barcelona. In the end it was the former, with Barcelona winning 75-73 despite a poor final quarter in which they allowed Real Madrid to cut the gap from 11 to just two.
