Bayern Munich have turned down the chance to appoint Arsene Wenger as the club’s new manager.

The Bavarians are actively pursuing a new head coach following the dismissal of Niko Kovac earlier this week, but talks with Wenger have proven unsuccessful.

Why have Bayern rejected Wenger? Five things to know…

  • Wenger has been out of managerial work since leaving Arsenal in May 2018.
  • The Frenchman has kept busy working as a pundit but hasn’t ruled out a return to the dugout.
  • Bayern recently sacked Kovac following a 5-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt.
  • And Wenger quickly emerged as one of the favourites to succeed the German.
  • However, Bayern have confirmed in a public statement that they have rejected Wenger.

Wenger had been in negotiations with Bayern regarding the vacant post, but chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has opted against appointing the ex-Arsenal boss, confirmed in a public announcement.

Bayern Munich stated (via Bild): “Arsene Wenger called Rummenigge on Wednesday afternoon and signalled an interest in coaching at Bayern.

“Bayern appreciate Arsene Wenger very much for his work as a coach at Arsenal London, but he is no option as a coach at Bayern Munich.”

Speculation had been heating up across the past few days in relation to Wenger and the Allianz Arena dugout, but the Bundesliga champions will now look at other possible candidates.

Among those are Jose Mourinho, who has previously talked up the possibility of one day managing in the German top-flight.

“The Bundesliga provides an exciting competition to follow, especially with the teams in the middle of the table,” he stated back in April.

“They’re constantly improving and thereby creating a more level competition.

“Full stadiums, great organisation, good tactical approaches by many teams – I think the Bundesliga is really interesting.”
