It’s been something of an eventful season on the basketball court for Bayern Munich. Despite middling EuroLeague form, the side were granted entry into the EuroLeague playoffs as the #8 seed following the expulsion of three Russian sides in from the competition. As heavy underdogs in the playoffs, though they were eliminated in the first round, they did take top-seeded Barcelona to a decisive fifth game, in which they even held a halftime lead.

Domestically, in Germany’s BBL, Bayern finished third, behind second-placed Bonn and their current opponents, Alba Berlin. In the BBL playoffs, they made quick work of sixth-seeded Chemnitz in the opening round before going the limit, five games, against Bonn, and securing a double-digit away win to reach these finals.

Alba Berlin, meanwhile, have faced no such domestic drama in 2021-22. In fact, they’ve been downright dominant. The Berlin-based side has lost once domestically since January 23, and has swept through the BBL playoffs to this point. In the opening round, they beat eighth-seated Bamberg in three straight, by an average of more than 25 points per game, before then dispatching fourth-seeded Ludwigsburg via three-game sweep.

In the opening game of the series, the two sides went back and forth for three quarters – Alba led by two points after one quarter, Bayern turned things around to lead by three at halftime, which Alba trimmed to one after three quarters…

However, in the fourth quarter, Alba turned up the heat at both ends of the floor, outscoring Bayern 25-11 and cruising to a 13-point win. They carried that momentum into game two in Munich, where they took a two-point lead after the first quarter, before taking command with a 20-10 second quarter, and ultimately seeing another 13-point victory.

The two sides are back in Berlin on Friday night for Game 3. Alba Berlin will be looking to secure a third consecutive BBL title, as well as a clean sweep of this playoff campaign. Bayern, meanwhile, are simply hoping to send the series back to Munich
for a fourth game. Now, Bayern can take comfort in the fact that, prior to the start of this series, they’d actually bested Alba Berlin in three of the sides’ previous four head to head meetings (two in the EuroLeague, two in the BBL), with two of those wins coming in Berlin.

That being said, whether, at the end of a long season full of twists and turns, they have enough left in the tank to pull off yet another upset is debatable. That Alba seem to have both an answer for every Bayern run this series, and the steady hand to see out comfortable victories suggests this is the end of the road for the Bavarians.

Bayern Munich probable starting lineup:Nick Weiler-Babb, Nihad Djedovic, Augustine Rubit, Vladimir Lucic, Leon Radosevic

Alba Berlin predicted starting lineup: Maodo Lo, Jaleen Smith, Louis Olinde, Luke Sikma, Ben Lammers
