Florian Wirtz already backed to exceed Kai Havertz

After just eight games across all competitions this season, Florian Wirtz already has six goals and five assists to his name, proving instrumental to Leverkusen’s excellent start to the campaign. At 18 years old, his name might be new to some, but anyone who has followed the Bundesliga over the past year-and-a-half will be well aware of the teenager’s talents. This run of form will come as no surprise.

It’s also no shock to see Wirtz compared to the last German wonderkid produced by Leverkusen: Kai Havertz.

“He’s a talented player,” Lothar Matthaus said earlier this year. “He will be the second Kai Havertz. He will go the same way as Havertz. In a few years, we will see him play for the German national team and we’ll see him play for a big, big team in Europe.”

Adding to the praise, former Germany defender Andreas Hinkel even backed Wirtz to exceed the now-Chelsea playmaker.

“He will be a key player for the future of Germany,” he said. “Havertz is similar in that they have something special, but Wirtz has the potential to be even better.”

Though Wirtz has lost on all three occasions he’s faced Bayern, he did score against them toward the end of the 2019/20 campaign. Given the form he’s in, you’d back him to do so again, and if he can inspire Leverkusen to a huge victory, watch how the praise pours in, even from outside Germany.
