Maccabi Tel Aviv are one of four teams to win at least four of their opening five games of the new campaign and currently sit second in the table, ahead of Olympiacos and AS Monaco on the points differential while behind Fenerbahce who have gone five from five. But it wasn’t the smoothest of starts to the season for the Israeli team, managing a narrow 84-83 victory over Zalgiris in their opener before losing to Fenerbahce by 15 points.
Since that defeat, however, Maccabi have bounced back. The three-game winning run started with a 78-70 victory over Monaco and continued with another comfortable win over LDLC ASVEL, two home victories over French sides. It was a third home game in a row last time out and this time the victory was perhaps Maccabi’s best performance of the season so far, beating Panathinaikos 85-74 to hand the Greeks their first defeat of the campaign.
Baskonia, meanwhile, are one win back from Maccabi but still occupy the early playoffs zone despite having a negative points difference. The Spanish side had a brilliant start to the new season, opening with a 81-71 win over compatriots Valencia and then beating Partizan in overtime. Baskonia made it three from three with a 92-75 win over Crvena zvezda but it has been downhill from there.
After going perfect in their opening three games, Baskonia were handed their first EuroLeague defeat of the season against Olympiacos, losing 97-92. They then suffered a heavy loss last time out, falling 87-61 to LDLC ASVEL, a game in which they lost every single quarter. Can they bounce back?
