This is Baskets Bonn’s sixth time in the Bundesliga play-off finals with the previous five all ending in defeat. Their debut came in 1996/97 when they were beaten 3-1 by ALBA Berlin, a result that would be all too familiar in years to come. The next four Basketball Bundesliga finals appearances for Baskets Bonn would also end in defeat to ALBA Berlin, in 1998/99, 2000/01 and 2007/08. One year after that last defeat to ALBA Berlin, Baskets Bonn were in the final once more but this time it was Baskets Oldenburg who beat them — the last time they were in the final. However, Baskets Bonn make take some heart from the fact that in all five of those defeats didn’t have home court advantage, but now they do.

Ulm, on the other hand, have made it to the Bundesliga play-off finals three times previously without victory — again all without home court advantage. Their debut in the final came one year after Baskets Bonn’s, losing 3-0 to ALBA Berlin but that would be their only defeat to the capital franchise. Instead Brose Baskets have been the bane of Ulm’s life with victories in 2011/12 and 2015/16, again both 3-0 defeats. So Ulm have already performed better than ever before, taking Game 1 79-73 — though we are currently tied at 1-1 after Baskets Bonn’s 104-75 Game 2 victory.
