Barcelona vs Real Madrid build-up & previous line-ups:

To say Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman is under considerable pressure would be a gross understatement. Barça’s hero of ’92, who comes into this weekend’s game having won two of his past five league matches, feels like he’s one major loss away from being given his marching orders. Defeat to eternal rivals Real Madrid is unforgivable and if Koeman falls on Sunday then he’ll become only the second manager in La Liga history to lose his first three Clásico matches after predecessor Patrick O’Connell between 1935 and 1940.

In more positive pre-match trivia, success here (if he features) will give Sergio Busquets the all-time win record in this fixture by a Barcelona player. He’s won 19 of his 40 appearances against Los Blancos coming into this latest showdown. His teammate Ansu Fati could follow in the footsteps of Samuel Eto’o, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Pedro who all netted in each of their first two Clásico starts in the 21st century.

A home goal is expected to be on the books as Barcelona have scored in 34 of their last 35 home games in La Liga (79 goals in total, giving them an average of 2.3 per game), failing only against Atlético Madrid in May 2021 during this run (0-0).

Despite their opponents’ recent failings, Real currently sit just two points and four places above Barça, and they come into this Sunday’s clash on a two-game winless streak (0-0 v Villarreal and 2-1 loss at Espanyol) though it’s worth noting that Real have two games in hand on second-place Osasuna who are one point ahead. The record 13-time European champions nevertheless boast a stellar record against Barça of late. They’ve not lost any of their last four games against the Catalan giants in the league while claiming three successive victories in all competitions heading into this weekend. To put this into perspective, Real haven’t won four or more in a row against them since 1965, and following their 1-3 win in October 2020 they can record consecutive away wins against Barcelona for only the third time in La Liga history. It would also be Carlo Ancelotti’s first win at the Camp Nou, as he’s not won any of his five away managerial games against Barcelona in all competitions (two draws and three defeats). This includes losing on both of his previous visits there are Real boss.

Player to watch: Karim Benzema (Real Madrid)

An interesting note: this will be the first Clásico since 2004 with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo completely absent from either squad. But that does not mean this fixture is devoid of stars. If anything the focus has now shifted to the future with the aforementioned Ansu Fati (18) and Vinícius Júnior (21) highlighted. That said, there’s plenty of veterans around, none perhaps better than Karim Benzema, who comes into this latest fixture having bagged 10 goals in 36 appearances (covering all competitions). He’s one of just 13 players to net double figures regarding goals in Clásico history. On the all-time top goalscorer list only Luis Suárez (11), Cristiano Ronaldo (18) and leader Lionel Messi (26) have netted more than him and are still playing.

Scoreline prediction: Barcelona 1-1 Real Madrid
