Xavi begins his reign as Barcelona manager when he welcomes Catalan derby rivals Espanyol for a La Liga showdown at the Camp Nou on Saturday evening (20:00 UK time).

The former midfield general inherits a team languishing in ninth and 11 points behind early leaders Real Sociedad albeit with a game in hand. As for their regional foes they find themselves level on points with Barça and seek a first away win in this fixture since 2009.

Barcelona vs Espanyol previous line-ups:

  • Espanyol (vs Granada): López; Vidal, Gómez, Cabrera, Pedrosa; Bare; Embarba, Herrera, Darder, Puado; De Tomás.

Player to watch:

At home, Barcelona have won their last 11 meetings against Espanyol in LaLiga, after winning just one of their previous five (D3 L1), since a 1-2 defeat in February 2009, in a match that featured Gerard Piqué, Sergio Busquets and current coach Xavi Hernández in the Blaugrana side. The last time Espanyol claimed a Camp Nou win in La Liga was in February 2009, when they ran out 1-2 winners, back then Gerard Piqué, Sergio Busquets and current Barça coach Xavi were in the Blaugrana side. If there’s a moment the Budgerigars could put that right it’s probably this weekend.

The side Xavi has inherited are currently on a four-game winless streak and have dropped points in their last two home games (1-2 v Real Madrid and 1-1 v Alaves). Espanyol, though, come into this Catalan derby having failed to win any of their last 15 road games which includes 10 defeats. That being said, leading marksman Raúl de Tomás has scored in his last five La Liga games (five goals in total) and could become only the second Espanyol player to score in six in a row in the competition in the 21st century after Raúl Tamudo (six in 2004). On top of that the Madrid native has scored in one of his two visits to Camp Nou in La Liga, with Rayo Vallecano in March 2019.
