Xavi makes his Champions League managerial debut when Barcelona host Benfica at the Camp Nou on Tuesday at 8pm (UK time).

The legendary midfielder started with a La Liga win over Catalan rivals Espanyol and inherits a Barça side positioned second in Group E. The Eagles, who are two points behind, are aiming to complete a double over them after inflicting a famous 3-0 defeat on the Blaugrana in September.

Player to watch: Darwin Núñez (Benfica)

A reinvigorated Barcelona under Xavi’s leadership is something for Benfica to really think about. On matchday two Jorge Jesus’ men humbled the Catalan giants in Lisbon by running out 3-0 winners. Starring that evening was Uruguayan forward Darwin Núñez who grabbed a brace. Heading into this Camp Nou showdown the 22-year-old has registered three Champions League goals, averaging a goal every 75 minutes, if he manages another at Barça’s home then he’ll equal Faustino Asprilla (Newcastle) and Andriy Shevchenko (Dynamo Kyiv) as the only players to net three past them in a single group stage campaign. Asprilla and Shevchenko famously managed that feat in 1997/98 with both scoring respective hat-tricks.
