Banfield vs Boca Juniors build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

Aside from a 2009 Apertura win, Banfield aren’t usually high finishers in Argentina and they ended the overall 2019/20 table in 17th, just eight points clear of Godoy Cruz who finished bottom. They then had an average Copa de la Liga Profesional campaign, finishing sixth of out 13 in Zone A and failing to qualify for the knockout rounds of the tournament. Although they won their final two matches of the Copa de la Liga Profesional, they were unable to get the new league campaign off to a similar start, being held 1-1 by Central Cordoba having taken the lead.

Boca Juniors, on the other hand, are defending league champions and reached the semi-finals of the Copa de La Liga Profesional before losing on penalties, a result that has started a poor run of form. Including the semi-final defeat to Racing Club, Boca Juniors are winless in their past four games across all competitions and draw their opening match of the new league campaign with CA Union. But the worst result of that run came in midweek as they were knocked out of the Copa Libertadores by Atletico Mineiro on penalties in controversial circumstances, with both sides (and police) clashing post-match.

  • Banfield (vs Central Cordoba): Altamirano; Coronel, Lollo, Maldonado, Canto, Quinteros; Galoppo, Sonora; Cabrera; Alvarez, Pons.
  • Boca Juniors (vs Atletico Mineiro): Rossi; Weigandt, Izquierdoz, Rojo, Sandez; Gonzalez, Rolon, Medina; Pavon, Norberto Briasco, Villa.

Alejandro Cabrera and Jesus Datolo are absent for Banfield, with the former picking up an injury just 15 minutes into their league opener, but Boca Juniors have no fresh concerns.

Player to watch: Cristian Pavon (Boca Juniors)

Cristian Pavon was a big arrival to Boca Juniors at the start of the year but his life in Argentina is yet to get going, hampered by an injury that kept him out until April. Pavon’s inclusion in the Boca team has been stuttered as a result, making just one domestic start as the team rotated with an eye on the Copa Libertadores.

In total, Pavon has made 12 appearances since his move to Boca with seven starts, but he has only been directly involved in one goal so far, setting up Carlos Izquierdoz in a 1-0 win over Lanus in the Copa de la Liga Profesional. However, the promise is there as the 25-year-old was directly involved in 13 goals for LA Galaxy in MLS last year, scoring 10 and recording three assists.
