Santos kick off their Brazilian Serie A campaign away to Bahia on Sunday at 12:00am (UK time).

Only Palmeiras (10) have won more national Brazilian titles than Santos (8), though the visitors are looking to lift their first since 2004. Bahia, meanwhile, have two titles to their name, but none since 1988.

Bahia vs Santos build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

The recent continental group stages proved to be frustrating ordeals for both these sides. Bahia could only finish third in their Copa Sudamericana group behind Independiente and Torque, crashing out of the competition altogether, while Santos dropped into South America’s second-tier competition, finishing third in Group C of the Libertadores.

One of the traditional giants of Brazilian football, Santos haven’t won the national title in 17 years and are looking to improve on a disappointing eighth-place finish last season. Bahia, meanwhile, finished 14th, only avoiding relegation by three points.

  • Bahia (vs Torque): Claus; Paraiba, Conti, Otavio, Santos; Daniel, Lucca, Thaciano; Rossi, Carvalho, Rodriguinho.
  • Santos (vs Barcelona SC): Paulo; Para, Fernandes, Peres Petroni, Jonatan; Carvalho, Ivonei; Gabriel, Pirani, Braga; Kaio Jorge.

Matheus Bahia Santos and German Conti were both sent off against Torque in the Copa Sudamericana last time out but suspension won’t affect them in this league game.

Sandry, Jobson, Carlos Sanchez, Rafael Longuine and Raniel are all sidelined with ACL injuries and will be out long-term.

Player to watch: Kaio Jorge

Though success has been a little more difficult to come by in recent years, Santos still churn out young Brazilian talent at a rate of knots. The latest tyro off the production line is 19-year-old forward, Kaio Jorge. Though still a teenager, Juventus, Arsenal and Bayer Leverkusen have all already been linked with Kaio’s signature and that’s because, since the start of 2020, the youngster has bagged 13 goals and two assists in 61 appearances across all competitions for Santos.

Kaio also managed six goals in 10 caps at U-17 level for Brazil and with the European transfer window just around the corner, the young striker will see these early Brasileirão games as a great chance to prove his credentials.
