AZ vs Ajax build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

Things were positively looking up for AZ before FC Utrecht left the AFAS Stadion with a narrow 0-1 win earlier this week. Pascal Jansen’s men had put together a three-match winning streak (1-3 v PSV, 2-1 v ADO Den Haag and 2-3 v Feyenoord) after dropping four points across two matches. As a result, AZ currently fourth in the Eredivisie, and exactly 10 points behind the leaders whom they welcome this weekend. At home they haven’t been anywhere close to flawless, with AZ securing five wins across nine matches played, though they do have the league’s fifth best record (17 points from 27 available).

As for Ajax they’ve looked strong on the road this campaign. Ten Hag’s side head into Sunday’s game having won seven of their opening nine fixtures away from the Dutch capital with Groningen (1-0) and Willem II (1-1) preventing the Amsterdammers from boasting a 100% record. They, nevertheless, find themselves sitting four points clear atop the league table after winning their last four Eredivisie games on the bounce. Ajax are currently unbeaten in eight games (including six wins) but on their last 10 visits to AZ they’ve won just five.

  • AZ (vs FC Utrecht): Bizot; Sugawara, Hatzidiakos, Martins Indi; Wijndal; Midtsjø, Koopmeiners; Stengs; Guðmundsson, Boadu, Karlsson.
  • Ajax (vs Willem II): Onana; Mazraoui, Timber, Blind, Tagliafico; Álvarez, Gravenberch, Klaassen; Antony, Haller, Promes.

Ron Vlaar, Dani de Wit (ankle) and Jonas Svensson (calf) miss this game for AZ, but Ten Hag has a fully available Ajax squad to choose from.

Player to watch: Teun Koopmeiners (AZ)

There’s a strong case this season’s ‘MVP’ could very well be playing for the hosts of this game. Teun Koopmeiners, the 22-year-old captain of AZ, has 11 goals to his name, with five coming from the penalty spot, despite being predominantly fielded as a defensive midfielder. He’s likely to start there again and go up against his Dutch U21 teammate Ryan Gravenberch, who’s firmly cemented a starting berth in Ten Hag’s starting lineup, though Ajax will be keenly aware of Koopmeiners’ strong passing range and threat from deep. So far in every high-profile game the Alkmaar-based club have performed strongly with their skipper leading from the front. A late missed penalty last weekend didn’t spoil their win at Feyenoord but, given the Amsterdammers’ strong away form, he can ill-afford to be below par.
