Atletico Madrid and Chelsea lock horns in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie in Romania tonight as Thomas Tuchel aims to extend his unbeaten start to life with the Blues.

A clinical Atleti side are bound to put Tuchel’s rigid defence to the test. Chelsea have kept four clean sheets since the switch in the dugout, but Diego Simeone’s men have scored an impressive 45 goals from 274 shots this term.

That makes them the second fiercest attack in La Liga behind only Barcelona and represents a league-best shot conversion rate of 16.42%. Luis Suarez, who averages over three shots a game, is at the heart of that statistic and tops the goal charts with 16 goals from his 66 shots this term.

Meanwhile, Stevan Savic has been booked more times than any other player in Europe’s top five leaggues and the Champions League combined this season (12). No Chelsea player has won more penalties or fouls in the final third than Timo Werner, operating in the areas Savic will defend.

Under Tuchel, Chelsea are averaging more than a goal a game with Marcos Alonso taking more shots per 90 minutes (2.55) than Timo Werner (2.48) and Mason Mount (2.53). Indeed, Alonso’s shot count is the highest of any player to have featured in at least five of Tuchel’s six Premier League matches in charge.

Match prediction: Atletico Madrid 1-0 Chelsea

Atleti will be keen to make a statement in Europe after their domestic title tilt hit a minor roadbump this week.

Diego Simeone’s men dropped four points in back-to-back matches against Levante in the space of four days, losing at the Wanda Metropolitano for the first time in La Liga this season.

Indeed, Atleti have made their home a fortress this term (P12 W9 D2 L1) but ‘host’ a Chelsea side who are keeping things tight at the back under Thomas Tuchel. Expect a tight affair.
