Atletico Madrid can secure another season of Champions League football with a win over Real Betis on Saturday (9pm).
When Spanish football returned in June, Atletico were sixth and it looked a genuine possibility that they would miss out on Champions League qualification. But Diego Simeone’s men have won five of their eight games since the return, drawing the other three, and are now on the brink.
With three games remaining, Atletico are six points clear of Villarreal but as head-to-head is La Liga‘s first tiebreaker, the Yellow Submarine will not be able to overtake Simeone’s side if they beat Betis.
For Betis, this game is a countdown to the arrival of Manuel Pellegrini, who was named as the club’s new manager for the 2020/21 season following the sacking of Rubi last month. But the former Manchester City and West Ham United manager will have to watch on for the remaining three games of the season, with sports director Alexis Trujillo tasked with ending Betis’ season on a respectable note.

Neither Atletico Madrid nor Real Betis have any fresh absentees but will be boosted the respective returns of Diego Costa and Sergio Canales from suspension
Player to watch: Diego Costa (Atletico Madrid)
Diego Costa is a striker that typifies everything everything Simeone wants from a player, playing with his heart on his sleeve, toeing the line between for the good of his team.
But this season Costa has been hampered by injury, managing just four goals and four assists in 20 La Liga games, while adding just one more assist in six Champions League matches. However, he has been in fairly decent form since La Liga returned in June, scoring twice and adding two assists – although three yellow cards during that run took him over the threshold for suspension, missing the draw with Celta Vigo.
Back from suspension, Costa should be back in the team on Saturday and a potential partner for Alvaro Morata, against a team he loves playing. Costa has scored in each of his five La Liga games against Real Betis, managing one per match but missed the opportunity to add to that tally earlier in the season due to injury. Time for Costa to strike on Saturday?
