Athletic Club will look to keep their hopes of Europa League qualification alive when they host struggling Real Valladolid on Wednesday at 6pm (UK time).

The Basque side are 10th in the table but can move to within six points of the top-six with a win here. Valladolid, meanwhile, are in the final relegation spot but do have a game in hand on the sides above them.

Athletic Bilbao vs Real Valladolid build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:

Athletic Club have responded well to their crushing 4-0 Copa del Rey final defeat against Barcelona, drawing 0-0 with Real Betis before beating league leaders Atletico Madrid 2-1 last time out. Another victory here would lift them to eighth in the table and well within reach of Europa League qualification, though rivals Real Sociedad, Real Betis and Villarreal lead the way in that race right now.

Valladolid, meanwhile, head north without a win in their last six La Liga matches, picking up just four points from a possible 18 during that time in a run that has seen them slip into the relegation zone. Even a draw here would be enough to see them climb out of the bottom three, but the visitors desperately need a win with the likes of Atletico Madrid, Real Betis and Real Sociedad still to come before the end of the season. Sergio Soriano’s men will be buoyed by the fact they beat Athletic 2-1 in their previous meeting earlier this season.

  • Athletic Club (vs Atletico Madrid): Simon; Capa, Nunez, Martinez, Balenziaga; Berenguer, Garcia, Vencedor*, Morcillo; Sancet, Villalibre.
  • Real Valladolid (vs Cadiz): Roberto; Perez, Fernandez, Yamiq, Olaza; Plano, Michel, Alcaraz, Orellana; Weissman, Andre.

Unai Vencedor is suspended due to yellow card accumulation, while Peru Nolaskoain, Iker Muniain and Yuri Berchiche are all injured. Yeray Alvarez and Ander Capa are both doubts.

Raul Garcia and Javi Sanchez are both injured, while Kenan Kodro is unable to face his parent club. Pablo Hervias is a doubt.

Player to watch: Inaki Williams (Athletic Club)

Though Athletic Club lost 2-1 in their last meeting with Valladolid, Inaki Williams was able to get himself on the scoresheet, netting a late penalty that proved to be no more than a consolation strike.

Since then, the Spain international has managed to increase his tally to five goals for the season, while he also has a team-high five assists.

But Williams has no goals and just one assist in his last 12 appearances across all competitions and both his recent form and overall totals this season aren’t up to the standards expected of such a talented player.

If Athletic Club are to overhaul the likes of Sociedad and Betis in the European spots, they’re going to need Williams to find some form at the end of the season.
