Real Madrid can take another step toward winning La Liga when they travel to Athletic Bilbao for Sunday’s 1pm kick-off.

Los Blancos kept their four-point lead over Barcelona with a 1-0 win against Getafe on Thursday night, but they left it late with Sergio Ramos scoring a 79th-minute penalty. Unlike in recent weeks, however, Real Madrid go into their next game knowing they can put pressure on Barcelona with a win, potentially extending their lead to seven points with the Blaugrana playing later in the day.

But standing in Real Madrid‘s way are Athletic Bilbao, who still harbour hopes of qualifying for the Europa League. Athletic are currently eighth in La Liga with five games remaining, four points behind Getafe and have been in decent form since the league’s return, winning three, drawing two and losing one of their six games.

Players to watch:

Raul Garcia takes penalty vs Valencia

Athletic Bilbao: Raul Garcia has been a feature of this Bilbao side for five years, joining from Atletico Madrid in 2015, and has been quietly going about his business while improving the team from midfield. The 33-year-old has been a frequent contributor of goals, scoring 49 in 164 appearances so far, almost double his Atletico tally despite playing 50 fewer games.

But this season has been a particularly special one for Garcia. Scoring both goals in Bilbao’s 2-0 win over Valencia in midweek, Garcia took his tally for the season to 13 goals, which is his best ever record in a single season. It also makes him the joint-fourth top scorer in La Liga, behind only Lionel Messi, Karim Benzema and Gerard Moreno.

But Sunday represents a big test for Garcia, searching for his 50th Bilbao strike, having managed just two goals in 35 games against Los Blancos across all competitions – neither of which have come in La Liga.

Real Madrid: Usually when you’re looking at a defender, you’re thinking of how they can prevent the opposition from scoring, but Sergio Ramos isn’t your ordinary defender. Like Garcia, Ramos is enjoying his best goalscoring campaign in La Liga, getting his ninth goal of the season in the win over Getafe, just when Real Madrid looked to be on their way to a draw. When Dani Carvajal was brought down in the box by Mathias Olivera with just over 10 minutes to go, there was only going to be one player to take the penalty. Up stepped Ramos to score his fifth penalty of the campaign. Only Santi Cazorla (6) and Raul Garcia (7) have scored more and it keeps Real Madrid in the driving seat for the title.

But it’s not just Ramos’ goals that are helping Real Madrid on their way. The Spaniard continues to be rock solid at the back and a vocal leader, eager to keep another clean sheet en route to a potential title.
