Atalanta ring in the new year by welcoming Sassuolo to Gewiss Stadium for a Serie A clash on Sunday afternoon (2pm kick-off, UK time).
The hosts are yet to rediscover last season’s swagger with their wholly inconsistent form leaving them just outside the Champions League places where Sassuolo are currently situated after starting this campaign on fire.

Atalanta vs Sassuolo build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:
Wins have been at a premium of late for Atalanta, who are yet to match last season’s irresistible form. Since ending a three-match winless streak against Fiorentina (3-0), they’ve remained unbeaten across their subsequent three Serie A outings but picked up one further win (4-1 v Roma). At home, though, La Dea are on a two-game winning run with another win this weekend potentially catapulting them into the top six.
Sassuolo presently sit three places above their opposition but they could only manage two wins across five matches in December, but they did come out on top at Sampdoria (2-3) last time out, which means they’re unbeaten in their last seven league matches on the road and they’ll fancy leaving Bergamo with at least a point.
- Atalanta (vs Bologna): Gollini; Tolói, Djimsiti, Romero; Hateboer, Freuler, De Roon, Gosens; Pessina; Ilicic, Muriel.
- Sassuolo (vs Sampdoria): Consigli; Müldür, Chiricheș, Ferrari, Kyriakopoulos; Magnanelli, Locatelli; Berardi, Traorè, Boga; Caputo.
Mario Pasalic and Mattia Caldara are both absent for Atalanta due to physical discomfort, while Rafael Toloi is sidelined.
Filippo Romagna and Lukas Haraslin are the only players missing for Sassuolo as they seek back-to-back Serie A wins.
Players to watch:
Atalanta: Given the attacking riches at Gian Piero Gasperini disposal, it’s not surprising to see Luis Muriel starting in four of Atalanta’s opening 14 league matches this season. He’s also never completed a full 90 but having started last time out against Bologna, and subsequently grabbing a brace, the 29-year-old Colombian centre-forward is not only hoping for back-to-back appearances but also netting in a third consecutive game — something he’s not managed in Serie A since March 2009 when Fiorentina was his club. Those strikes leave him on seven for the campaign which impressively places Muriel as the club’s leading marksman despite having played the 11th fewest minutes among his teammates.
Sassuolo: Each year, there seems to be a team which captures the imagination, seemingly coming from nowhere to make you do a double-take when looking at the league table. Sassuolo are the 2020/21 candidate in Serie A and much of their success thus far is down to wily forward, Domenico Berardi, who has bagged seven goals heading into this latest round. The one-club man is already halfway to matching last season’s total and given Atalanta’s open style, there’s a great opportunity for him to chase what opposite number Muriel is also seeking and that’s scoring for a third consecutive game.
