Atalanta vs Liverpool build-up, pre-match team news & previous line-ups:

Jurgen Klopp has thus far coped well with the growing casualty list currently hampering his squad, winning each of his last four games, including two in Europe and a late 2-1 winner against an in-form West Ham at Anfield over the weekend.

Substitutes Xherdan Shaqiri and Diogo Jota combined expertly to break Hammers hearts in the 85th minute, while Premier League debutant Nathaniel Phillips shone at the back to offer Klopp some much-needed respite following an injury to Fabinho in midweek.

Atalanta meanwhile have continued to perform under Gian Piero Gasperini. Currently they are second in Serie A after edging out Crotone on Saturday, while the Italians sit just two points below Liverpool in Group D, and will be confident of leapfrogging the English champions.

  • Atalanta (vs Crotone): Sportiello; Toloi, Romero*, Djimsiti; Hateboer*, Malinovskiy, Freuler, Pasalic, Mojica; Gomez, Muriel.
  • Liverpool (vs West Ham): Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Phillips, Gomez, Robertson; Jones, Henderson, Wijnaldum; Salah, Mane, Firmino.

Mattia Caldara, Marten de Roon and Robin Gosens have all been left out of Atalanta’s squad. Hans Hateboer and Cristian Romero are among the 22-strong group but went off injured against Crotone.

Liverpool will continue to be without Fabinho and Virgil van Dijk. Joel Matip is back in training, along with Naby Keita and Kostas Tsimikas, but Thiago was absent. Whichever players are passed fit, Klopp will have to tweak his backline once more as Nathaniel Phillips, who starred against the Hammers, is not in Liverpool’s Champions League squad.

Players to watch:

Atalanta: Duvan Zapata has been directly involved in six goals across five Champions League starts for Atalanta (four goals, two assists) and the Colombian will be looking to capitalise on Liverpool’s weakened backline when the Merseysiders travel to Italy on Tuesday. The 29-year-old boasts an excellent marriage of strength, goalscoring prowess and link-up skills (five goals and four assists in only eight appearances this season). He could have a field day if the Reds’ aren’t defensively organised.

“It will not be an easy match,” Zapata told reporters. “Last season they won the Premier League, two years ago the Champions League. They are a strong team at an international level.

“[But] it will not be easy for their defence either, we can hurt them if we are able to play our game.”

Liverpool: Diogo Jota scored on his first Champions League start for Liverpool in the 4-0 win over Midtjylland, and he could now become only the second player to net in his first two starts in the competition for the Reds since Robbie Keane in 2008. The Portuguese proved once again at the weekend that he is Klopp’s secret weapon and a player who could seriously displace a somewhat under-fire Roberto Firmino. An inspired signing from Wolves, his 85th-minute winner against West Ham has given Liverpool renewed momentum and they will take that into the game against Atalanta.

Scoreline prediction: Atalanta 2-2 Liverpool
