Free-scoring Atalanta play host to relegation-threatened Brescia in Serie A on Tuesday night.
For the second season running, Gian Piero Gasperini’s side have been Italian football’s great entertainers and look destined to finish in the top four once again. ‘The Goddess’ currently have a 13-point advantage over fifth-placed Roma with six games remaining.
It would take a monumental collapse from the Bergamo-based club to miss out on Champions League qualification, but having scored 87 goals this term (the most in Serie A, and 20 more than Juventus) there doesn’t appear to be any danger of such a capitulation transpiring.
Gasperini’s side will certainly have one eye on Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-finals next month, and they can allow themselves to get complacent, such has been the buffer created between themselves and Roma. Even so, there are no signs of letting up.
That does not bode well for Brescia, who are in a spot of bother. Diego Lopez’s side are seven points from safety, recently lost 3-0 to Roma and have conceded the second-most goals this term (64). Atalanta could have a field day.

Atalanta & Brescia’s previous line-ups:
- Atalanta (vs Juventus): Gollini; Toloi, Palomino, Djimsiti; Hateboer, De Roon, Freuler, Castagne; Ilicic, Gomez, Zapata.
- Brescia (vs Roma): Andrenacci; Sabelli, Papetti, Chancellor, Mangraviti; Tonali, Bjarnason, Ndoj, Spalek; Skrabb, Torregrossa.
The headline absentee for Brescia has of course been Mario Balotelli. The Italian is currently locked in a war of words between the club and looks destined to leave when the season finishes. Atalanta meanwhile have no major injury concerns heading into this match, but Gasperini could be tempted to shuffle the pack following the weekend’s draw with Juventus.

Atalanta: For those that thought the Goddess’ unprecedented top-four finish last season was nothing but a fairytale can think again! Gasperini has not only masterminded what looks to be a successive top-four finish but also a quarter-final meeting with PSG in the Champions League, and he has done so in some style. Imperative to his liquid football and high-octane approach is of course Alejandro Gomez. The diminutive Argentine is creativity incarnate and truly embodies the free-flowing football of Atalanta in the Gasperini era. Only two players have registered 10+ assists in Serie A this season. Gomez is one, Luis Alberto of Lazio is the other, but it is the former currently leading the charge on 16, with another picked up against Juve on the weekend.
Brescia: There hasn’t been much to cheer about for the Little Swallows this season, but one ray of light amidst the turmoil has been academy protege Sandro Tonali. Likened to Andrea Pirlo because of hairstyle, stature, position and football upbringing, Tonali is far more than master passer. The 20-year-old has a bite and tenacity to his game, giving the Brescia midfield an added layer of aggression. His neat passing and vision complement his dogged nature, and there will certainly be no shortage of suitors when the window opens, regardless of Brescia’s fate.
Scoreline prediction: Atalanta 4-0 Brescia
