Aston Villa team news

Gerrard naturally took up a policy of rotation at the weekend as his side put Leeds to the sword in a 1-0 triumph, with a combination of first-teamers, fringe players and youngsters, including 17-year-old Josh Feeney, given a run-out in Perth. One player fans would have been itching to see in action ahead of pre-season was academy star Carney Chukwuemeka, but the 18-year-old has so far been absent as his contract situation concerningly rumbles on, with the club now reportedly prepared to listen to offers for the England youth prospect — and Barcelona are said to be monitoring the situation with a very attentive eye.

Chukwuemeka, who made 11 Premier League appearances last term and recently starred as England won the 2022 Euro U19 Championship, has just one year left of his current contract at Villa Park, and transfer guru Fabrizio Romano recently reported that the club are willing to listen to offers around £20m for their prized youth asset. There is a strong indication that Barcelona are in the mix for his signature, a link that chimes with Chukwuemeka’s recent declaration that Jude Bellingham’s rapid rise away from Birmingham has been an ‘inspiration’.

“Me and Jude have known each other for a few years. What he is doing now is inspiring me in a big way to do more.” Chukwuemeka recently told Soccerbible.

“I’m particularly driven by him. I’ve felt how he can drive me and motivate me. I’d love to get into that position so that I can help show the next player what can be done.

“That’s my goal really; I want to bring all the success I can home to England, to my family and to all who have helped me on my journey so far.”

Borussia Dortmund, where Bellingham currently plies his trade, are one of the clubs reportedly keeping tabs on Chukwuemeka, but for the immediate future, Gerrard will be focused on preparing the players whose respective futures aren’t up in the air for another testing match down under later this week.

Scoreline prediction: Aston Villa 3-0 Brisbane Roar
