Aryna Sabalenka ended 2022 in defeat, losing the WTA Finals final to Caroline Garcia, falling 6-7 4-6, but she has already bounced back in style. In the Adelaide International, Sabalenka did not drop a set en route to securing her victory, building momentum going into the Australian Open. She’ll now be looking to at least equal her best-ever finishes at the tournament.
In both 2021 and 2022, Sabalenka reached the fourth round of the Australian Open, and last year built on it. A third-round finish in the French Open may have been slightly disappointing, but Sabalenka would go onto reach the semi-finals of the US Open, only losing to the spectacular Iga Swiatek — who she beat in the semi-finals of the WTA Finals.
Her opponent Tereza Martincova isn’t often seen in the later stages of Grand Slams, with a third-round run at Wimbledon in 2021 her best-ever finish. Last year, she had three first-round exits and one second-round defeat at the Grand Slams, with her best run coming in the Australian Open. She won’t be favoured to win this one.
