Taylor Fritz will be hoping to make the third round of the French Open for just the second time when he faces Arthur Rinderknech on Thursday. The American is ranked ninth in the world but was as high as fifth earlier this year, dropping after a couple of underwhelming performances in Madrid and especially Italy, in preparation for the French Open.

As mentioned, Fritz doesn’t often get past this stage at the French Open, with three second-round exits in his career alongside one in the first-round and his best showing of the third round in 2020. But confidence will have been taken from a routine 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 victory over compatriot Michael Mmoh.

Also good news for Fritz is the fact that Rinderknech doesn’t get past the second round altogether when it comes to the major tournaments. In his 18 appearances at a Grand Slam or ATP Masters 1000 tournament, Rinderknech has never made it past the second round, with three first-round exits this year at the Australian Open, Indian Wells and Miami Open.

Last time out at the Italian Open it was a straight-set defeat to Casper Ruud, including a bagel in the second set, and Rinderknech has a 4-11 record against players in the top 10. In the first round at Roland Garros this year, Rinderknech beat Richard Gasquet 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (3).

Prediction: Fritz in straight sets
