Arsenal legend Patrick Vieira says his former club will not solve their problems by sacking manager Unai Emery.

The Gunners, who find themselves sitting eight points below the Champions League places, are currently on a five-match winless run in all competitions

Is Unai Emery on the brink? Five things to know…

  • Unai Emery succeeded Arsene Wenger as Arsenal manager in 2018.
  • He has begun his second season in charge on the backfoot.
  • Arsenal have won just eight of their 18 matches in all competitions so far this season.
  • It has led to calls for the Spaniard to be relieved of his duties.
  • Former Gunners captain and club legend Patrick Vieria believes sacking him will not solve their problems.

Such a poor run of form has led to calls for Emery’s firing but the powers that be are reluctant, and have already publicly backed their embattled Spanish coach.

It hasn’t, though, stopped many from being linked with the job. Among those names are unemployed duo Massimiliano Allegri and Jose Mourinho, as well as Vieira.

The 43-year-old Frenchman enjoyed nine illustrious seasons in north London, during which time he lifted three Premier League crowns – the last being Arsenal’s most recent triumph.

Since hanging up his boots Vieira has moved into management, first overseeing MLS outfit New York City before taking over at Nice. The former Gunners captain now has a word of warning for those that view Emery’s departure as a tonic for their recent ailment.

“It’s true Arsenal are going through a tough spell,” he told reporters on Monday.

“But I haven’t watched all their matches, so I can’t talk about their game.

“They have a coach who is qualified and who works well. When a club is having a difficult time, it’s important to be united. I think he has enough experience to get them through this difficult spell.

“We have to get behind him and give him time to change things. I am not sure a change of manager will fix the problems.”
