Nicolas Pepe and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are proving to be astute signings after it was revealed that they both currently lead a Premier League stat.

Arsenal made Pepe, 24, their most expensive acquisition when they parted with £72m to bring the Ivorian winger from Ligue 1 outfit Lille, whilst Man Utd shelled out £45m for Wan-Bissaka’s services, following the 21-year-old English right-back’s impressive defensive performances at boyhood club Crystal Palace.

New faces lead the way: Five key things to know…

  • Most tackles: Aaron Wan-Bissaka (26)
  • Most shots on target: Teemu Pukki (11)
  • Most take-ons: Nicolas Pepe (15)
  • Most fouls won: John McGinn (15)
  • Most clearances: Tyrone Mings (39)

Wan-Bissaka in a short period of time quickly became renowned for being a forward’s nightmare on the count of his relentless tackling. He’s lived up to that reputation at Old Trafford so far, when in the Red Devils’ recent 1-1 draw at Southampton he became the first player to make 10+ challenges in a Premier League game this season.

Across the opening four games he’s attempted a stunning 26 which is six more than second-place Ricardo Pereira. It should make Man Utd’s upcoming game against Arsenal at the end of September tasty given Pepe is so far the league’s take-on king. The new Gunner has completed 15 dribbles from 22 attempts.

Elsewhere the metronomic Kevin De Bruyne has created the most chances (16) with five of those ending up as a goal. A beneficiary of the Belgian is Sergio Aguero, who has bagged six goals, which places him top of the goalscoring chart, while not far behind him is Teemu Pukki on five – the Norwich City marksman has so far had the most shots on target (11).

No longer a daunting prospect for newcomers, Aston Villa winger John McGinn has won the most fouls (15) whilst teammate Tyrone Mings has made the most clearances (39). Someone who often goes under the radar is Bournemouth’s multifunctional defender Nathan Ake who has made the most interceptions (14) to date.
