Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has hit back at Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke’s claims he left the club for financial reward.

The Gabonese striker has netted 49 goals in 73 appearances across all competitions for the Gunners since leaving the Bundesliga outfit in January 2018.

Did Aubameyang leave for the money? Five things to know…

  • Aubameyang left Dortmund for Arsenal in January 2018.
  • He’s scored 49 goals in 73 games since then but hasn’t played Champions League football.
  • Dortmund have qualified for the Champions League in each of the last four seasons.
  • Watzke recently suggested Aubameyang’s move was only fueled by money.
  • But Aubameyang has hit back, calling Watzke a “clown” and suggesting he is the one financially motivated.

However, during that time, Arsenal have failed to qualify for the Champions League, leading Watzke to take a swipe at Aubameyang’s motivation for leaving Dortmund.

“Of course, it is hard to keep a player in the face of such sums,” he told Suddeutsche Zeitung recently. “Some go to clubs because of this money, where they have not played Champions League for years.

“Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who plays great at Arsenal, will probably be warm-hearted when he looks at his bank account, but on Wednesdays, will be saddened when he has to watch the Champions League on television.”

But Aubameyang has taken to social media to defend himself, suggesting Watzke – who he referred to as a “clown” – claimed he would “never sell” Ousmane Dembele but then went back in his word when Barcelona offered a £100m+ offer and that his Arsenal transfer had nothing to do with money.

“Better for you I never talk about why I really left Dortmund Mr Watzke, you [are] such a clown,” he wrote on Twitter.

“I remember that time you said we never gonna sell Ousmane, then you saw more than 100M, you were the first to take that money.”

“Don’t talk about money, please!!! Leave me alone please.”

Arsenal face Standard Liege in the Europa League on Thursday evening.
