Arminia Bielefeld vs Werder Bremen build-up, previous line-ups & injury news:
Arminia have struggled for consistency throughout this season but, since the end of January, things have got worse. The Blues have taken just two points from their last six Bundesliga games in a run that has not only seen them slip into the relegation playoff spot, but also dismiss head coach Uwe Neuhaus. He was replaced by Frank Kramer, who could only manage a 0-0 draw against Union Berlin in his first game in charge on Sunday and faces an uphill battle to keep Arminia in the German top-flight for next season.
Werder, meanwhile, travel south in much better form. Florian Kohfeldt’s side have lost just three of their 11 games across all competitions since the New Year, taking 13 points in the Bundesliga during that time to lift themselves to 12th in the table. Die Werderaner will have been disappointed to throw away a 1-0 lead in a 1-1 draw with FC Köln at the weekend but will feel confident that they can capitalise on Arminia’s poor form and effectively seal their survival status for another season.
- Arminia Bielefeld (vs Union Berlin): Ortega; Brunner, Pieper, Nilsson, Laursen; Maier, Prietl; Cordova, Vlap, Okugawa; Klos.
- Werder Bremen (vs FC Köln): Pavlenka; Veljkovic*, Toprak*, Friedl*; Gebre Selassie, Eggestein, Mohwald, Augustinsson*; Sargent; Fullkrug, Rashica.
Venezuelan forward Sergio Cordova suffered a mouth injury against Union Berlin but should be fit to face Werder, but Cebio Soukou is out injured. Meanwhile, Patrick Erras is out for the hosts, while Marco Friedl, Milos Veljkovic, Omer Toprak, Ludwig Augustinsson and Davie Selke are all doubts.

Player to watch: Josh Sargent (Werder Bremen)
After netting just once in his opening 16 Bundesliga appearances of the season, Josh Sargent now has three goals in his last six outings, most recently heading home at the far post to put Werder 1-0 up against FC Köln at the weekend. His tally now stands at six goals in 25 games in league and cup competitions — Josh Sargent the creator is very quickly becoming Josh Sargent the goalscorer.
Given the number of dry spells Werder have suffered in front of goal this season, Sargent hitting this sort of form is just what Kohfeldt needs in order to get his attacking machine going.
That said, the 20-year-old, who is arguably the current front-runner to become the United States’ long-term starting centre-forward at international level, offers far more than just goals. Sargent is superb at playing between the lines, taking the ball in deep spaces and threading passes through to his fellow forwards, bringing wide players into the action and dragging opposition defenders out of position.
Arminia have conceded 41 Bundesliga goals so far this season and Sargent — who also has two Bundesliga assists to his name in 2020/21 — will see this game as a perfect opportunity to continue his recent hot streak.
