Argentinos Juniors vs River Plate build-up & previous line-ups:

Gabriel Milito couldn’t have asked for a better start to Argentinos Juniors’ campaign. The former Champions League winner took charge in January and oversaw three consecutive Copa Libertadores successes, beating Nacional, Universidad Católica and Atlético Nacional, to put Argentinos Juniors in command of Group F. However, they’d suffer a home loss to Universidad Católica and another defeat on the final week at Nacional though El Bicho still finished on top. It led to a round-of-16 meeting with Buenos Aires rivals River Plate in which they snatched a draw having gone a goal down. The club from La Paternal are one-time Copa winners having tasted success in 1985.

It’s a completely different story for Los Millonarios, who are four-time Copa Libertadores champions with their most recent triumph coming two years ago. Under the leadership of Marcelo Gallardo they began slowly, winning just one of their opening three group stage fixtures with Fluminense and Santa Fe holding them to a draw whilst they ran out 2-1 winners over Junior. It was a similar run in their final three games but this time Fluminense humbled them 1-3 at Estadio Monumental. As runners-up of Group D they drew fellow Primera División club Argentinos Juniors and they’ve still got it all to do after letting slip a one-goal lead.

  • Argentinos Juniors (vs Independiente): Chaves; Villalba, Di Cesare, Minissale; Cabrera, Kalinski, Romero, Mater, Gómez; Coronel, Reniero.
  • River Plate (vs Colón): Armani; Rojas, Maidana, Pinola; Vigo, Zuculini, Paradela, Fernández, Angileri; Carrascal, Fontana.

Player to watch: Fabrizio Angileri (River Plate)

A number of European clubs — Lazio, Valencia and Lille — are reportedly keeping tabs on River Plate left-back Fabrizio Angileri who has made no secret about dreaming of a move abroad but for now supporters are expecting him to remain professional and help Los Millonarios reach the next round.

Across five previous Copa Libertadores this season, Angileri has scored once and created two more goals. He came off the bench to play the final 28 minutes against Argentinos Juniors last time out but Gallardo is expected to play him at wing-back from the start in this second leg.
