Two thirds of the way through the first group stage of qualification for the 2023 FIBA World Cup, to be held next August and September, Venezuela and Argentina have a veritable stranglehold on Group A in the Americas region.

The Venezuelans have dominated, winning all four of their group games thus far, by an average margin of just over 25 points each. Just behind them in the table are the Argentineans, who’ve won a similarly impressive three of four by an average margin of nearly 15 points, but were defeated by Venezuela by 19 points on February 26, in Buenos Aires.

The two sides square off again Thursday night in the Gimnasio Luis Ramos, in Puerto La Cruz, in the north of Venezuela. Argentina will be looking to draw level with Venezuela with one round of group games left to play, while the hosts will be looking to clinch the top spot in Group A with a game to spare.
