This is a repeat of the 2017 final, which USA won 81-76 to claim their seventh AmeriCup crown, extending their lead as the competition’s most successful nation. The defending champions had a rocky start to the 2022 edition of the AmeriCup, losing 73-67 to Mexico but they still managed to finish above their North American rivals. In the very next match, USA got off the mark with a 88-58 win over Panama but the telling victory was the 101-49 over Venezuela which ensured they finished top of Group C on points difference.
In the quarter-finals, USA were pit against Puerto Rico who had finished second in Group B and two sides traded successful quarters. But in the end USA managed to survive a late scare in the fourth quarter to win 85-84, reaching the semi-finals for the 10th time – winning eight of their previous nine.
Argentina have become regulars in the AmeriCup final in recent years, contesting in seven of the nine to take place this century. They have also been in the semi-finals 14 times, winning eight of their previous 13 appearances so far. Last winning in 2011, Argentina started their 2022 AmeriCup campaign with a 95-62 victory over Virgin Islands, the opener of a perfect preliminary round.
In their second match, Argentina beat Puerto Rico 99-86 and then closed Group B with a 90-78 win over Dominican Republic, only losing two of their 12 quarters. Finished with a slightly worse points difference than Group A winners Brazil (a one-point different), Argentina were the second-ranked team going into the knockout stage and faced Venezuela who had finished third in Group C. Unlike USA, Argentina had a bit of a tougher game against Venezuela, winning 76-53 – though the score got a lot closer as Argentina slowed down in the final quarter.
